Home to around 57 million people and more than 40 ethnic communities, it blends Swahili coastal heritage, the vibrant city life of Nairobi, and some of the most iconic wildlife landscapes on the planet, including the Maasai Mara and the Great Rift Valley. English and Swahili are both official languages, which makes daily life and study easy for international students. Known as the "Silicon Savannah" for its fast growing tech scene and as the birthplace of M-Pesa mobile money, Kenya offers quality higher education taught in English at a fraction of Western costs, a warm "Karibu" (welcome) culture, and an unbeatable base for adventure across the continent.

Getting around Kenya is affordable and full of local character. In cities, the most common option is the matatu, a shared minibus known for its bright artwork and music, alongside regular city buses and three wheeled tuk tuks. For short trips, boda bodas (motorbike taxis) are quick and everywhere, and ride hailing apps like Uber, Bolt and Little Cab are widely used and reliable, especially at night. Fares are usually paid in cash or by M-Pesa mobile money. Between cities, long distance coaches connect all major towns, and the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), known as the Madaraka Express, links Nairobi and Mombasa in about five hours. Domestic flights connect Nairobi to the coast and safari destinations.

International students need a Student Pass issued by the Directorate of Immigration Services, not a tourist visa. Applications are made online through the eFNS portal (fns.immigration.go.ke) once you have been admitted to a recognised institution. The Student Pass costs USD 100 per year for most nationalities and is exempt for East African Community citizens. It is normally valid for one to two years and is renewable for the length of your course. To enter the country you also need a valid electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), which costs around USD 34. Typical requirements include a signed and stamped Form 30 from your institution, an admission letter, a valid passport with at least six months validity, passport photos, academic certificates, and proof of funds to cover tuition and living costs. Apply about three months before your course starts, as processing can take several weeks.

Kenya has become one of Africa's leading destinations for international and exchange students, hosting more than 15,000 foreign students across its universities and colleges. Degrees are taught in English and cost far less than in Europe, North America or Australia, making it popular for semester exchanges, full degrees, language and cultural immersion, and volunteer or research placements. Universities such as the University of Nairobi, Strathmore, USIU-Africa and Kenyatta University run partnerships and exchange agreements with institutions worldwide. Beyond the classroom, students gain hands on exposure to conservation, wildlife, community development and East Africa's fast growing tech and startup scene.
